SIATech North County Independent Study: The Value of Building a Community for Students

SIATech schools promote building communities, not just within the walls of our schools but beyond it. By creating relationships with other schools, local organizations and community members the doors of possibilities open up.

One example of this is demonstrated through North County Independent Study (NCIS) Sewing Sessions led by Ms. Kibbee. SIATech North County has built a connection with Kibbee and she has now become a long time SIATech volunteer. She also happens to be a former teacher which gives her the ability to quickly and effortlessly connect with students. “Her enthusiasm for teaching our students sewing, crocheting, glass working, quilting, and more is contagious,” said NCIS Mentor Teacher, Ms. Nichols.

Kibbee leads various creative and hands-on lessons for students earlier this year students sewed their own drawstring bags. This past week students learned how to make bags of old pairs of jeans. “NCIS students loved this project and cannot wait until Sarah comes back in May for her next project,” said Nichols.
