SIATech Boyle Heights Independent Study Student Story
SIATech Boyle Heights Independent Study, one of SIATech’s newest sites, might have just opened its doors a few months ago, in November 2014, but word is quickly spreading about the program that we have to offer local youth. With our classroom all ready to go, we welcomed our first student and since then have continued to maintain a steady stream of highly motivated and driven students. One such student, Linda Molina-Castillo, a Boyle Heights native, was looking for a school where she could focus on her work, while working at her own pace. She didn’t like the traditional school setting because she felt like she wasn’t getting the help that she needed to be successful. She says, “My experience with SIATech has been good. I like my teacher and the principal. I enjoy being able to come into the classroom whenever I want and get the help that I need. ”

Linda has come a long way in a short period of time. She’s gone from being a rather shy student, to one that isn’t afraid to ask for help. She is able to see that her hard work is paying off, which has given her the confidence that she needed to continue to work on obtaining her high school diploma, so much so that she has already began to ask about graduation and all that comes with that special day. Like Linda, many of our other students were tired of not being able to thrive in a traditional school, and therefore welcomed the opportunity to join a school like SIAtech. Our success thus far is in great part due to one of our community partners, the Boyle Heights Technology Youth Center, who has been referring students to us since day one. In this New Year, we look forward to continuing to build relationships in an effort to reach out to as many students as possible, so that they too might have a second chance at obtaining their diploma.
