Come Build A Board!
Students at SIATech South Bay Charter High School were able to utilize some of the latest technology, virtual reality, to design skateboards. This amazing software provided by Open Source Skateboards allows students to put all of their skills to work by using STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) with skateboards.
The designing process for our skateboards includes using our virtual reality before the actual drawing on them. Students had a lot of fun, learned some new technology, and earned high school credits at the same time. This interactive course empowers students to explore careers in the science and high-tech feilds.
Open Source Skateboards also offers educational kits and workshops that cover:
- Hands-on skateboard building: vacuum-forming, basic woodworking, mold-making, digital fabrication, skateboard art, finishing, & safety.
- Skateboard design and science: geometry, physics, materials science, & design for manufacture
- CAD (Computer Aided Design): 3D modeling, 2D drafting, design for manufacture, & 3D printing.
- Programming and electronics: Arduino, electronics integration, soldering, & electrical safety.
- Business fundamentals: business plan development, financial planning, website design, & product sourcing.
- Testing, skateboard lessons, and demonstrations: data collection and analysis, physics, & having fun!
